Sumatra Indonesia Coffee

Sumatra Indonesia coffee, especially from the Mandheling region in Aceh, is a unique Arabica known for its rich, full flavour profile. Grown on the volcanic slopes of Mount Leuser, in one of the world’s oldest ecosystems, this coffee draws on mineral-rich soil rich in volcanic ash and various nutrients, giving it depth and intensity of flavour.

Flavour notes and sensory profile

Sumatra Mandheling coffee is distinguished by notes of dark chocolate, sweet tobacco and spices, with a subtle woody accent. Herbal and delicately earthy notes are also noticeable, adding distinctiveness. Thanks to the giling basah process, which gives it its characteristic creamy body, the coffee retains a mild, grape-like acidity and a long-lasting flavour.

Roast level and intensity

Sumatra Mandheling beans are best suited to a medium-dark roast, which brings out their chocolate, spice and earthy notes. This degree of roasting adds depth and full character to the coffee, making it an ideal choice for both espresso and pour-over methods, which highlight its complexity.

Origin and unique giling basah process

Sumatra Mandheling coffee comes from the Batak region in western Sumatra, in the Aceh area, at an altitude of 1,100-1,500 metres above sea level. The giling basah processing method, or wet hulling, involves processing the beans at a higher than typical humidity (around 50%), which gives the coffee a unique flavour profile, richness and characteristic notes.

Certification and quality control

Sumatra Mandheling coffee is often available in Grade 1 and undergoes additional selection processes, such as Double-Picked (DP) or Triple-Picked (TP), which ensures the highest quality and consistency in flavour. These beans are sorted by hand, which contributes to their exceptional purity and consistency of profile.
